Design Consultation
Gary will come to your home and discuss your needs in greater detail. He will ask you about your goals and what type of landscape improvements you are considering. We will talk about what existing problems you wish the design to solve and how you intend to use your garden. We will discuss your tastes and design style preferences. Do you prefer natural curvilinear shapes or a more formal look? Are you interested in creating a sustainable garden that uses native plants, limits water usage and incorporates recycled materials into the design? If you intend to include new hardscape elements such as a patio, we will ask if it will be primarily used as a family space or whether it needs to function to accommodate greater numbers of guests when you entertain. We will discuss the variety of landscape material options available and their associated benefits and costs. At this meeting, it would be helpful to talk about plants and color preferences that you find appealing. The more information you provide, the better we will be able to design a landscape that it tailored specifically for you and your explicit needs. That’s our goal – to create outdoor spaces that are uniquely your own. We want to help you capture your vision.
When meeting with Gary for the first time, it would be helpful to have a copy of your Plat of Survey available for review. Much of the information needed to develop the base information for the future landscape plan will come from this survey. Copies of architectural plans for your home or other improvements you have made and wish to retain would also be helpful for us to see at our initial consultation. We will also take field measurements to supplement existing conditions not reflected on the survey or the architectural plans. If you have pictures of landscape styles, materials and plants that you find appealing, we would also like to see them.
If this consultation goes well and you desire us to proceed to the next phase, we will require a payment of a modest design retainer before progressing with the actual design work. The amount of this payment will be determined by the extent and scope of the requested improvements and determined at the initial consultation. For most residential projects, the design retainer is in the range of $400-$600. If our firm does the actual installation of the project, the amount of the retainer will be credited back to you on the final construction invoice.
